Looks like we'll have fine weather for Christmas here after all, high 70s and a bit cloudy but at least it's (hopefully) not raining.
You may or may not be aware that Christmas here in NZ is a bit weird. It's traditional to follow the same processes as the Northern Hemisphere - cook a nice big roast turkey for the family to gather around the dining room table, sing about snowmen, get drunk and say stupid things before having a fist fight with your stupid brother/uncle, and all that. However, it's Summer for us, and the country is gradually coming around to the absurdity of it all, so we're slowly pivoting towards wearing t-shirts, shorts and jandals (um, flip flops?) while having a barbecue out in the sunshine.
Nowadays my wife normally makes some lovely smoked chicken, brie and plum sauce filo pastries, and we follow it up with pavlova for dessert. Sorry but I have no translation for pavlova, not sure how common it is in North America.
Also, children are off school for 6-7 weeks over Christmas, since this is their end of year/Summer break. Most schools close up around mid December and go back again in early February.
/Culture of NZ lesson for today.

Christmas Eve at the home of our friend's daughter. Christmas Da,y dinner with my sister and brother in law. Most of my family is scattered down to the south now. There are no big family celebrations.
Our low key celebration with my son and his family suits me just fine. Salad, pizza, gift exchange and time spent when people are not rushing to get from one place to another. How I hated that when my son was small.

A pavlova is a dessert named after Anna Pavlova. So no translation. Anything with meringue has to be good!

The Portuguese make a baked pavlova that is firm on the outside, and oozy and chewy on the inside.

We're postponing Christmas until December 30, because of COVID. Step-Mom got it on Tuesday. Granddaughter was staying with her and so far, has tested negative.
Wendy and I are opening our presents on Christmas, but the adult kids and the granddaughter will wait until the 30th.

Huge storm coming tomorrow, we already stocked up on all of our food for the holiday, batten down the hatches and enjoy the indoors for us. I'm okay with that.

Food is bought, cars are gassed up and the generator is ready. Bring on the storm!!
