They may be the same yes, and they go by several names, people on the street call them no-see-ums because they are difficult to see.

As a kid, I loved to go to Horseneck beach in Mass but the green head flies would take chunks out of you.

Many in Ontario will go north to a cottage for summer vacations, but the black flies are horrendous. That is one reason we always go south for summer vacations.

In early summer there is an infestation of lake flies or shad flies, they will cover every inch of every object and every building, several inches deep. They don't bite but it is pretty gross to see for the inexperienced. The infestations are so large they can be tracked on weather radar.

Yup they can be nasty flies, you definitely need some protection when in that area.

This weekend I plan to complete the electrification of the back boundary fence, which will mean 90% of the property boundary will finally be live.

I don't intend to touch-test the 8,000v wires myself, but inevitably I will. Sigh.

Seaweed on the beaches in southern California is quite different from the green grass- looking stuff. Oh, wait. It's kelp in CA.
