Dave, any chance you will still get to attend if you feel good tomorrow and Sunday morning? It is, I assume, an outdoor event. If you mask up and avoid hugs you shouldn't pose a real threat to anyone else.

Regardless...I hope you get back to full strength soon.

Our club current Chairman has been in contact with me a couple times already. He won't come right out and say it but he is fearful I will attend. Since I held that position for 9 straight years, through 2015, I can appreciate where he's coming from and will respect it. I would love to go if for no other reason than for the wife to enjoy some time out of quarantine with her friends. Thanks Mike, full strength is the new goal.

I think I would find that scary. I use to crash on one that belonged to a friend when we were in college but it was always tied to the dock.

I know the owner is very experienced at sailing and also the cautious type. I know I will be hesitant but I try to do things at least once. For instance I am afraid of heights but managed to go to the top of the Empire State Building, The World Trade tower and the Eiffel Tower. Even went on a roller coaster.

Have fun. Here's all you need to know.

A "sheet" is a rope, not a sail.
A "halyard" is a rope.
The "main" is the mainsail, the big one.
The "jib" is the smaller sail ahead of the big sail.
If you hear somebody yell "Coming about", duck.
If someone yells "Jibe! jibe! jibe!" hit the deck.

This weekend is the SVRA vintage race events at Watkins Glen, NY. Events include the all MG race, the Collier Cup. Yesterday two of the MG drivers I have crewed with were inducted into the local museum’s walk of fame with bricks in their names. I’m sorry to have to miss it but I saw them when it really mattered – when they were on the tracks.

Operating a sailboat doesn't look like the easiest thing to me. Pretty much in general with any kind of boat I find the smart thing to do instead of buying a boat make friends with someone who has one and likes to have guests aboard!
We had our montly cars n coffee this morning and had some new stuff show up including a 72 MGB, Jaguar XK replica with a 302, a willy's hot rod, a new corvette which I can't believe how big they are, lotus europa, and a lot of the regulars were there also. If you are on facebook you can see pics at cars and coffee manchester vt.

To be completely accurate, the first command is: "Standby to come about!" The next command "Hard alee." is when you duck, because the boom (the part the bottom of the sail is attached to) will be coming swiftly overhead!

I love sailing. In fact, I was seriously considering buying a sailboat instead of the NSX at the time. Wish I could have done both! I had a friend with a 28' Pearson that I used to sail with extensively and that is where I got my sailing knowledge, such as it is. Looks like this:

"Make ready to come about" = Prepare to duck.
"Coming about" = DUCK!

My dad used to use "coming about" like one would use "hard alee", but then he built stink pots (motor boats) for a living. We (mostly he) did build a Windmill class little sloop though, and from scratch when I was a kid. Little 15.5 footer weighed less than 200 lbs fully rigged and would fly by the many Star class boats on Keuka Lake in a light wind.
