We have a neighbor who has had a contractor putting on replacement roof shingles on his house for the past several days while the temps have been basically 5°. I think he's nuts, as is the contractor that's doing it. What do you think?

Asphalt roof shingles? Yup. That's just wrong.

Well Dave sometimes your options get restricted when you discover things you should have known beforehand.

Oh, and I didn't mention we have 3 to 4" of snow on the roofs! I keep waiting to hear the ambulance. And, its dark enough right now that the street lights are on and fools are still up there.

I'll probably make a run down to the Cape to check on the house this weekend. When the temps fall like this it tests all the systems in the house. I want to make sure everything is ok. Plus I need to put the water heater on vacation mode.
Probably a good idea. I went down to my MG garage today and discovered the furnace wasn't working. Seems my less than two-year old Honeywell thermostat died within the last couple of days.

I agree. They are probably doing more damage than good.

That is exactly what happened to us last year, Dave. The battery died due to the cold, I think. I changed the batteries this fall.

Tomorrow I am going to install a humidifier. The house is so dry that I need to do something.
