What on earth am I supposed to do with old books?

Check with your local fire dept. Ours has an annual Book Drive where the public can take all the old books they want to get rid of to the nearest firehall. They send all the books to various distribution centers - some go to worthy charitable causes, some to to book stores for re-sale.

Someone mentioned a college reading room, but I used to work for our university library as a student job a million years ago, and they accepted used book donations, sold them at a used book store inside the library and the money went to buy materials for the library itself. Good for a tax deduction.
Another thing you can look into is that some jails and prisons could really use books.
Or you could have a good old fashioned book burnin!

Locally we donate a lot of books to a library. There is also a little book-nook that takes used books that it then resells for a dollar apiece. We donated 14 cases of books to Goodwill when we cleaned out bookshelves before moving a couple/years ago. I save mine up and then donate them to the library. There is also a tiny little community library in a senior living facility here that takes donations. Those folks LOVE fairly recent best sellers.
