What does this mean?
So last night, I'm on my way home and tune into the start of a basketball game. Just before tipoff, the announcer says that team x 'will be moving left to right on your radio dial'. I've heard this saying a thousand times over the years and have never understood it. At the time, I was driving due west so left to right would mean the team x's offensive basket was to the north. But what if I would have been driving due east? Everything would have been the opposite.
So I ask you, wise members of the vintage forum, what the hell does this phrase actually mean?
BTW, a primary reason that I posted this up here is because you have the highest probability of actually knowing what a radio dial is (or was). I think the last car that I ever saw a radio dial in was my parent's 1976 Pontiac Ventura.

It's a joke, 8 ball. The announcer is just giving you his point of view from his vantage point. When you listen to a game on the radio, don't you picture each team moving in a certain direction?
By the way, left side of the radio dial is the low frequencies.
Oddly enough, my wife and I were sitting in the S in a parking lot on a Sunday and we were listening to the beginning of the Browns game. I asked "well which way are they going?" The announcer told me within 20 seconds.

I don't think it "means" anything. The announcer is just describing what he sees. It may help the listener visualize the game better. If it doesn't for you then just consider it as the announcer being silly.
The late great Chick Hearn used to use this phrase during Lakers games.

As good as a broadcaster as Chick Hearn was, I lost a lot of respect for him when he tried to say how much better he was than Cal Ripkin was when Ripken broke Lou Gehrig's record for continuous games played. Hearn went on to say that he had called many more games in a row than Ripkin played and he should have the record. Somehow I find the two talents in completely different categories.
