We didn't get all that cold last night. Bottomed out at -4°F not really that bad since they we're talking about 10 below.

This is just insane! Everything I plowed and shoveled yesterday is completely blown in I plowed out one of my walks it had a 6 foot snow drift in it and this morning its about five feet again and driving to work the access road to the resort was down to pavement but it was so cold that nothing they use to treat it will work I started sliding going in a straight line. Wind is about 60 m.p.h. I can barely hold a shovel in my hand.

A suggestion for those of you with ice dams and you are going to laugh but I'm not kidding, put some ice melt in some panty hose and if you are able to lay it out on the roof do that if not throw it up on the roof.
I saw that on TV, Rob. We may have to go that route...if we have ice melt....
Ice melt, but not rock salt? Rock salt would be bad I think????

Calcium chloride is best.

Sounds miserable. Correction: It IS miserable!

We had a battery chirp on a smoke detector just after 5:30 this morning. Rick had cleared out the vent for the gas furnace but we feared the chirp was the CO2 detector. Great thing to happen on the coldest night of the year. Geesh, I can call the fireman, I'm in my robe and have no make up on!

That detector was fine, as was the smoke detector part of that unit, and another smoke detector, but when I put a new battery in the chirping detector it blared. Don't know what that was about. I gave up on it, and put it on the kitchen table, sans battery, hoping the house wasn't smoldering somewhere. Needless to say, I did not go back to sleep.

You probably should have it checked out Lainey better safe than sorry.

Didn't know what else to do. Smoke detectors (2) in basement were fine, and both are in working order. We both got up, looked around, noticed nothing. If we venture out today, we will pick up a new detector.

Maybe swap out one of the non chirping detectors with the one that was chirping and see if it chirps or blares.

The bases aren't the same. We tried that. Just put the new battery in and the thing blares.......Keep in mind we are in a one story house and the other detectors are in VERY close proximity. I think/hope we are OK. I put the chirping battery back in. No chirps yet...those happen in the wee hours it seems.

And I just ventured out to feed the birds. BRUTAL!
Path to shed and bird feeders.

Our road is a one lane road.

Our back porch. There is no where to shovel the snow.

Back deck. Yes too much snow on it, yes snow on the roof and we have never ever shoveled our roof. Hoping the ice doesn't end up causing an issue. It is cold, but sunny, maybe we'll get some melting today.

Soon, soon, we'll see the daffodils, RIGHT?

Lainey, with snow that deep, where's the bird feeder? It's either buried or hanging 10 feet off the true ground. That is a lot of snow! Why does the back side of the house have more snow on the roof than the front? Does the wind cause that?

I have two bird feeders near back deck. The others are on the other side of the yard. Didn't snap a pic.

Where the snow ends up depends on the direction of the wind. We have almost no snow on the north side, just the south side which is sunnier.

Cabin fever is setting in. I wanted to head out in the Jeep. Rick is nixing the idea right now. Officials are discouraging people from being out in order to let road crews clear the roads properly.
