hey it's snowing, lightly mind you, but they are predicting another 4-6 today and tonight..
you know annoyance snow.

Awoke and went to the bathroom this morning.
Why is the water in the toilet running....?
No it's not. Hmmm What is running ?

Head for the cellar, one of the outdoor faucets apparently froze and popped.
At least the water was all outside. So water is shut off now and I'll deal with it in the spring when it warms up.

We've been here 15 years and never had anything freeze.
You’re fortunate to have shutoff valves for the outside water bibs. Water for the entire house had to be turned off when I experienced the same…oh yeah; it was fixed the same day.

lost another outdoor faucet, same scenario, hear water running WTF
time to go shut the other ones off too.

I'm really confused on why this happened. not the physics per se but why after 16 years when we've had much colder weather before.

We replaced both of ours with freeze-free faucets, after it happened once.

Freeze-free is the way to go. Just have to remember to disconnect the hoses.

I’m not a plumbing expert nor do I have any knowledge of your house or your water bib’s design. I do though know that a few things may cause problems with plumping:
  • Maybe it was colder than you thought or it was cold for a longer period.
  • Your house's insulation may have shifted or became wet.
  • The heat inside the house was reduced or redistributed.
  • Metal-based plumbing supply systems, such as copper, that make direct contact with concrete are at risk of corrosion from the outside and become more susceptible to leakage unless they’re properly sleeved.
  • If your water is highly acidic, it may corrode the pipe from the inside out reducing its integrity.
  • Vibrations may cause leakage at the joints or wear through the pipe where it contacts another surface.
  • Hose attached to outside bib during freezing weather.
  • None of the above.

That is what I "thought" was installed. I will have to figure out what went wrong this spring.

Snowing lightly here. About 2' on the ground. Supposed to get another foot+ over the next couple of days. My wife is enjoying it. She is going cross country skiing with a friend while I do our taxes this afternoon.

Smart wife! Enjoy what you have.

This is what I have today, and it's quite easy to enjoy
