I always figure that Jan.15th is the 1/2 way mark for winter here.

Hi Levi,

Would you say that your winter is from about Oct 15 to Apr 15?

Has your winter been milder than usual so far this winter?

We lived in Ithaca from 1968 to 1974, and I imagine the climate in Ithaca is similar to yours. Is that right?

I can remember our first winter in Ithaca, quite a rude awakening for both of us having lived our entire lives up to that point in the San Francisco area.

I remember that we once took a picture of a Time and Temperature sign showing 22 degrees and we sent it to our relatives in California because it was so cold. Little did we realize that we were sometimes going to have temperatures in the minus 22 degree range in Ithaca!

Sue

A little north of Levi,
I put my "S" in hibernation,on November 01,and take it out on May 01.

Hi Sue,
Your suggested dates are pretty good. I'm guessing I'm about 200 miles further north of Ithaca, as I'm 160 miles north of Albany, so our temps tend to be on the colder side, however we usually don't get as much snow.....don't get much of the "lake effect" storms as we are north of the great lakes. Generally the largest snowfalls are the nor-easters.
This winter has been a blessing, so far have only had 2 days below zero, with a low of -8 about 10 days ago.....last year below zero was nearly a daily thing. This winter has been pretty wet but instead of 15 degrees and snow it's been 30's and rain. The biggest snowfall this winter has been 5 inches so I've only had to use the snowblower once. I know I'm jinxing myself writing this .
It must have been a real shock moving to Ithaca from SF. I grew up in Western NY, near Dunkirk.....they get more snow but the cold isn't as bad. I remember when I 1st moved up here in the early 70's and people would talk about plugging their cars in during the winter and I thought they were nuts.....the joke was on me!

Being in Ohio you must get your share of winter, it's usually just a little later in the fall and ends probably in March while here April is the norm.

Take care and hope for an early spring....like back on 2002.

grrr hovering right at that rain / freezing rain/snow line.

on our hill, we're at about 500 feet of elevation which seems to be just enough to keep us from just switching over to rain.

Hi Levi,

Nice "talking" to you.

We are in Central Ohio, so our winters are not that bad, I guess. Although, living away from SF for over 47 years (in various states, including NY, Michigan, Kansas, and Ohio), I still do not like winter!

We often still get snow into April, but I am hoping that this year winter does not seem so long since it has been very mild so far, with only a small amount of snow.

Also, now that I am retired, most of my activities are optional, and I can just stay bundled up inside if I choose to do so.

Dennis is still working, and this week, after a snowfall, I asked him, as he was heading out to work, "Don't you want to retire?" and his response was "It's very tempting!"

I'm hoping for an early spring, too!

We've gotten about 3 inches so far it is the wet heavy stuff. Still coming down don't think we will be getting much more.

Wow!! We had a Meteotsunami this morning. Waves came in 7' over high tide. Winds were over 80mph. Lots of palm branches down and a few trees.

Never been in a Meteotsunami before. I'd never heard of one before.

Right now I have to go cut up a 60' piece of bamboo that is laying on my shed and guest house.
