Current rain rate is just short of 3" per hour. The area is under flood warnings with a lot more rain coming.

Just finished a book called Isaac’s Storm about the 1900 hurricane that flattened Galveston. It talks a lot about the Weather Service, as Isaac was employed by them. Interesting start to the agency. Worth the read.

We have that tomorrow...today is cloudy with t-storms from noon on. Got in a nice walk early.

We are safe and have pretty much dried out as yesterday was sunny and breezy. We saw almost 6" of rain and a small tornado did touch down here in Long Beach, doing some damage to a school and several homes. Could have been far worse, but the season is just getting started, so...

Now is the winter of our discontent.
Late June marks the start of the season when we hide in our homes, when we go from house to car to store or theater or pub, then back again with as little time spent outside as possible, just like you Yankees do from late November until sometime in April. Oh, sure, there are a hardy few up there who brave the northern winter months to engage in "winter sports". So we too have our dedicated, if misguided souls who risk skin cancer and heat stroke at the beach. But for most of us the long months of highs approaching triple digits and lows in the upper 80s it's a time to hunker down, a time when loss of electricity and the air conditioning it provides is as dreaded as a heating oil shortage in a New England winter.
Of course there's the hurricanes.
See you in the spring...sometime in October.
