Not a ton of military service in my family history unless you count the Spanish American war and WWII. My great uncle Leo flew P38 lightnings as bomber escort over Italy. Shot down twice, captured once and spent a year in a POW camp.

To all currently serving, thank you. To all who have served before, thank you as well.

And if you did not catch Vietnam in HD on history channel last night it was excellent. A special thank you to those here and elsewhere who served in Vietnam. My wife works with a guy who came home from his tour and was in the airport in uniform on his trip home. Someone came up and spit in his face. I am going to drop him a line to say thank you for his service on Friday.

And a PS on Andy Rooney, as a reporter, he covered the bomber groups that flew out of England. He did not have to go on any missions as a reporter but went anyway saying, "if they had to go through it I thought I should as well." My wife could not stand Rooney's commentary. As a fan of 60 minutes since I was ten years old, I always loved Andy's bits.

Although I never served "in country" during the Vietnam "conflict". I also had the experience of being spat upon for being in uniform. In my case, it was a bit less insulting. It was in August of 1970 while on a weekend pass from Basic Training to visit my folks. I was a private (E-Nothing) moving through the Port of Authority building (bus terminal) on my way home from Fort Dix get on the subway to Queens when a "person" came up to me an called me a "baby killer" and spit on me. I remember it like it was the day before yesterday.

Thankfully, public opinion has changed.

On my way though the town of Clifton, VA tonight, a local church was displaying a banner above the entrance way: "Thank you veterans"
