Veteran's Day

Veteran's Day
I heard tonight, Andy Rooney began his early reporting from St Lo, France in WWII for the Stars & Stripes. My uncle died there. I never would have guessed they were there at the same time. Small world.
Don't forget Friday is Veteran's Day.
Uncle Bill survived the Normandy landing as a private in the infantry and assistant squad leader. Later he was promoted to sergeant. On the 11th of July 1944 the company was assaulting enemy positions near St. Lo. His squad was given the mission of cleaning out a machine gun nest, when they were subjected to enemy mortar fire. One of the shells landed near him causing wounds of the head and reportedly he died instantly.
I imagine I am the only person alive who still thinks of the sacrifice he made.
God bless our men and women in uniform everywhere! Fly the flag Friday, if you don’t do it every day.

In the past several years I always stated that "next year" I am going to take Veteran's Day off. Well, now that I am unemployed I have it off this year.
I plan to take advantage of Applebee's offer on Friday. I think that this is a nice gesture, as well as smart marketing. Note that the offer is only valid for one of six entrees and does not include beverages or tips, and is only good for the active military person or veteran, not the others in the party.

100 years ago on 11/11/1911 at 11:11, the war to end war ended ,
sadly with respect to wars, it didn't end much of anything.

^^We have a few restaurants around here doing the same. One is normally not open until 1600, but this Friday they will open from 1100 to 1400 to provide free meals and non alcoholic drinks to vets. Since it is a "more expensive" resturant, I would expect a "huge" turnout. Since I'm retired I'm going to camp out on their doorstep Thursday night and wait until they open.

Will put some flowers on my dad's new grave at Arlington, and salute all the vets out there.

Where we live we have a very large 'Support Our Troops" group. This Friday we have a silent auction with all donated items. All proceeds go to the SOT fund. We send care packages to troops overseas every month, send handmade cards so they can write their families, have a golf outing in the spring where 20 families from Ft. Hood are invited up for a full expenses paid weekend.
Bless them all!
