However, I must say when I lived in New Haven, CT the thin crust brick oven pizza (local debate: Pepe's vs Sally's, though I think Modern's also pretty good) was well worth the wait.
I try to avoid the whole pizza religious wars, but I must admit that I have gone many miles out of my way to stop in New Haven for pizza. Last time I was there was last fall, when I was on a business trip to Hartford. I took a side trip to New Haven and ate at Sally's. I never had a strong preference between Pepe's or Sally's.

Why is it the best pizza often seems to be in the place we moved from?
This is true of a lot of food. There is a whole lot more to food than just the food itself. It's that little place that only you and a few others knew about, the place where you went on the first date, the place with that cute waitress, the place right by the ocean, etc.

Lots of time if you took the exact same meal and transposed it in time and space to where you are now, it would suffer terribly by comparison with the memory.

I like Pizza Hut, but my favorite is Numero Uno. Theirs is a deep dish and I get pepperoni.

^ OT (well, there is Italian food involved) - speaking of Eyetalyuns...if you have never seen it, you have to see the movie Breaking Away!

All the pizza around here sucks too. And I was never able to find a decent one when I lived in SFL either. Not that it matters now that I can't eat the stuff - thanks to a certain busybody who forced me to go the the damned doctor. I told her no good would come of it, but did she listen to me?

Three of my favorites in no particular order:
Thick crust vinegar pepper pizza (sliced pickled hot cherry peppers)
Traditional pesce salat pizza (AKA sheet pizza)
Traditional "hot" pizza (sheet pizza with crushed red pepper instead of fish)

"REFUND... REFUND... REFUND!!! "

Breaking Away is one of my all time favorites... (Not to mention that the whole thing was being shot when my sister's were there at IU... btw: the townsfolk weren't called "cutters" they were called "stonies", but the studio thought people would think that meant something else... )

As fer the "Beast"... I hear y'all got indoor plumin' an' everthin' these days!

(Not to worry... in NYC, they think "Hush Puppies" are shoes! )

Unless I missed it I'm surprised someone hasn't mentioned Chicago pizzas.

They pretty much suck around here too - it's usually the course of last resort.
