Seems to me that Dean's comment about cetaceans' cultural significance is what's guiding whatever bureaucratic decisions are being made in this case, as in other similar cases. It's just too politically incorrect for agencies to ignore these situations.

But it is a tad absurd, in the bigger scheme of things. I'm reminded of a sequence of TV news stories I saw the other day, undoubtedly programmed that way intentionally. First, there was this horror story out of NE Africa, concerning the Darfur situation and all the suffering children. Then, there was a local story about a bunch of feral cats that will be made homeless when a developer does his thing in their current (abandoned warehouse) habitat. The talking heads were far, far more sympathetic to the cats.

There is one practical reason, though, to put some effort in getting these whales back out to sea: I sure wouldn't want a dead one to wash up in my back yard, if I had a river house. HPH

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. It's that same mindset and my opinion of it that keeps me popular with the dolphin huggers.
