My first real sporty car was a '73 (I think) Mercury Capri 2600, near the end of the time when they were imported from Germany. Taught me a lot about gears and clutches, poor thing. :-)

My previous sporty cars:
67 BMW 1600, 72 Lotus Europa, 84 VW GTI, 95 VW GTI. Most fun to drive was the BMW. It was very stable in 4-wheel drifts. It was the only car I modified for better performance. New cams & springs, shocks, exhaust, carbs from a 2000CS, wheels, tires, ported the intake.

After my sophmore year in college a couple of us went to Europe for the summer. We rented a BMW 1600 that we drove from Germany through Sweden etc and back down through Austria.
I still remember being impressed at how that car was just cruising at 100 mph. It was the first European car I'd had a chance to really drive.

I drove a 1979 Fiat X1/9 (Blue of course) for three years. That year, Fiat gave it that big .2 liter (1.7 to 1.9 liter) displacement enhancement! (Oh!, sounds familiar Honda). Rob had mentioned he owned one also, but had problems with it. I never had any problems, just thought it was grossly underpowered, but fun to drive!

The first "sporty" car we owned was a 1971 Mercury Capri POS. Less said about this, the better. Next sporty type car was an 83 black Civic S. Then an 88 Crx Si and a 89 Civic Si. Last before the S was a 99 Integra L.

Gosh, I forgot my 1973 Porsche 914 I had for about a year. Also had a '76 Toyota Celica, bought brand new, a great car.
Patty, I sold my '73 Honda 250XL Motosport in July. I bought it in '74, so I owned it 32 years. Had about 4600 miles on it and I sold it for almost double what I paid for it. Sorry to see it go, but I just never used it, the last 10+ years.

Seems there are at least 2 other Capri (former) owners out there...... and you know I am told there are at least 8000 1971-1977 Capris left in the world. If you are interested there is a web site www.capriclub.com and twice annual meets )one in Hebron OH (Labor day weekend) and the other is at the All Ford Nationals at Carlisle (normally the 1st weekend in June),,,,,, And you know I missed both meets this year ....

I enjoyed the heck out of my Capri 2600 - faster than a scalded dog. Mine was as red a red as I can imagine a car being. I think I paid around $3500 for it new - took delivery with 7 miles on it. Then, the typical Ford problems set in - rear window latches that continually came unglued, shift knobs that kept stripping their threads on the leather cover, sunroof cables that broke, twice....
But it was fast, it handled well, had a great clutch and decent gearbox to go with a heck of an engine; and it could ALMOST outrun a 240Z. I daresay it could get off the line a fair bit quicker than my S can. Mebbe I'll check out the site :-)
