Default Time for a change

As I finish my year as your CO, I have started the process of finding a suitable replacement. I believe in term limits and I believe that every interested Vintage member should have the opportunity, at some point, to serve as your CO. I have talked to several people about this and now I ask the general population of Vintage to consider the transition to a new CO.

First, lets think about the past year. Lainey became my co-CO, we started the meet the new member threads, we had big meets in three different regions, we started the Politics sub-forum and we started holding small regional vintage meets in other parts of the country. Lots of new members joined and joined in the fun too.

So why am I telling you all this? Well, these were ideas that I had for the forum before I became the CO. As CO, I was able to give them a try. I think most of them worked out well and I'm glad I had a chance to serve. (I really can't take much credit for the small regional meets. other folks put them together, but I was an enthusiastic supporter.)

I think the rest of you probably have good ideas too. I think everyone who wants to serve here should get a chance to do so. We are all adults, and Vintage is about life experience and the wisdom that comes with it. What good is it all if we don't get a chance to put it to use?

The COs for this forum have all come from the east coast, and almost all of them have come from the north east. I don't think that is healthy for a national forum. The best way to get meets started in other parts of the country is to recruit COs from other parts of the country.

So as my last act as your CO I would like to preside over the selection of your new CO and the transition to the new CO, to the extent needed. For the new folks, let me tell you how this works. The COs do not select the new COs. We ask if folks are interested, but in the end you folks volunteer, and then the forum decides who they want for the position. In the past we have had a problem finding folks who want the job. I hope we don't have that problem this time.

One person has already expressed interest. Let me know if others are interested. You can post here or PM me or Lainey. Please take this opportunity to express any thoughts you have about the forum at this time too. Now is a good time to take assessment of where we are and where we are going.

I agree with Bill about trying to broaden the Vintage coverage. In the beginning, most Vintage members were from the East. Some of those early members founded Vintage and Rob (ralper) and I became the first CO's. The first three years, during which I was CO, were a real growth period. Now we are over 400 members and counting, and many new ones are from other areas. This is a good thing. I firmly believe the Vintage Forum will be around for years to come. The enthusiasm shown online and at the meets is infectious, and I have a record number wanting to get in on Spring Fling 07.

I hope some peeps from these other areas will consider becoming CO. If anyone wants to PM me about the job, you certainly can. I'm sure Bill and Lainey (Lainey8484), as well as Rob, are willing to give prospective candidates some pointers. I really enjoyed my time as CO, but new blood is always good. Vintage rocks!!

Being a C.O. is very rewarding. It is well worth the effort that it takes. The Vintage forum is a wonderful place, and being a C.O. here, watching it grow and develop is very satisfying.

As Deb said, if you have any questions about the forum or being a C.O. don't hesitate to PM me.

I will be sorry to see Bill give up his CO duties. It has been a pleasure working with him.

I'm sure there are many here who can fill the bill (no pun intended) and may not realize it yet. It's not that hard of a job, though it does take time.

Please don't hesitate to throw your hat into the ring, folks.

Thanks Bill

I thought you did a world class job.

You should consider a run for office.

I would vote for you.

Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate them. It has been a real honor to serve.

Let me ask this question as part of the transition. What do people think of the Politics sub-forum? Do we need it? Do we want it? What are the alternatives?

I have a suggestion about this. What if we eliminated the politics sub-forum but allowed the discussion of current events in the main forum. Any comments of a political nature would either be edited out of the thread, or the thread would get moved to the site's general politics forum if folks could not control themselves. Before answering, keep in mind that a presidential election is right around the corner.

Edit.

Forgot there was a general political forum. Remove the Vintage sub forum and let politics go to the general forum.

In the recent past, I haven't seen much difference in the tone between the 2 forums.

I personally have enjoyed not seeing political/current events threads in the main forum, and I rarely visit the Politics subforum. But I can also see that a CO may not want to moderate a separate political subforum, and some peeps probably don't have a problem with them being in the main forum. The subforum engendered some heated debate when we created it. I'd rather not have that happen again.

Re the post above, I'd prefer that, if we decide to eliminate the Politics subforum, those topics go to the s2ki Politics Forum.

I agree, I think we should keep the forums seperate.
