If they really do release a much more civilized drop-top, I hope they change the model name. I'm not sure the owners of such kinder/gentler s2000s would fit in all that well around here.

They may as well bring back the Del Sol.
That was exactly my thought. You have to love that article thought. The car will be small, use lighter weight materials, and come in 100 pounds lighter than the current car. Sounds like a long way to go for very little. Maybe they can just drop the price of the current car. That might increase sales.

You guys are taking this article WAY too much at face value. There's no evidence given here that this is anything other than some journalist's best guess.

That's true of a lot of things. But we still discuss them.

Seems like i read the same thing in Motor trend several months ago.
I took it for what it was worth. When Honda has a press release, that's
when i belive it.

There is absolutely no reason to believe that anything in this article is true.

I do like the idea of a lighter S2000. I would love to see it 300 to 400 pounds lighter. I wouldn't mind if it was a little smaller. And, if it was a little smaller and 300 - 400 lbs lighter the Si engine would work fine.

I don't want it to be more civilized or look like a Thunderbird.

Nonetheless, there's no reason to believe that this will actually happen.

I've finally got my car just like I wanted it and that took six years. It's a MY00 with a tad over 40K on the odo. I neither know nor care what Honda plans henceforth and I daresay neither should any of you if your car is paid for.

I'm just hoping a cherry '00 (with some mods) will be worth somewhere near what I've got in mine (adjusted for inflation) when I don't feel comfortable driving it anymore. But that's gonna take awhile.

Personally I think the article is a lot of bunk. There may be an element of truth here and there but really..... The new Miata can be bought in the low/mid 20's, so dropping the S2000s price back to say 30 isn't going to be any competition for them.

Clearly it's time for a model change. The biggest sales month they've had in the past 18 months was a little over 500 cars, and generally they are only selling a couple hundred a month - most, at a discounted rate I suspect.

As for the new model, I'd certainly like to see one that makes us all feel proud. It was clear from the discussions I had with Honda designers a few years back that they were struggling about which direction to take the car. At that time they seemed to be leaning towards something high-tech. Frankly it would not surprise me to see gas/electric S2000 or at least something that draws young people in to the show room. Another Miata isn't going to do it.
