My mother used every one of those lines, especially the last one.

Mine did too. It got me to wondering how that could be? No doubt your Mom and mine lived a thousand miles apart. Where do you think they all learned them? Those are word-for-word quotes! Movies? Radio? Newspaper? Could all of their parents possibly have used them as well? If so, how did they all hear them? Did everyone from the Old Country talk that way! I think there was only 2 on the list that I never heard my mother say - the first one because I was an only child and the 3rd one but all the rest......... word-for-word. Anyone have any ideas on how that happened?

I used to think that there was some sort of "mother's school" or perhaps a "mother's network" where all mothers could go to learn exactly the proper phrases to toment their kids with.

Most everyone I know has heard most of these same phrases too.

The most frightening thing about all of this is that now that we have kids of our own, Liz and I find ourselves using some of these phrases too.

Memes passed down through successive maternal lines, not unlike mitochondrial DNA being passed down only by mothers to offspring.
