Even though I drive my 2006 S2000 only 1,000-1,500 miles per year I change the filter with each oil change. I consider a clean, new filter as a cheap but worthwhile investment. Plus I’m getting older and if I change filters with every oil change I don’t have to try to remember if I changed filters last time!

When compared to the cost of synthetic oil, the filter is pretty short money.

That’s my thought. Cheap insurance. I would never change the oil without changing the filter. Never!

UPDATE:

I returned home last night from the 2853 mile road trip (with KGF) to check out the motel and surrounding area at Eureka Springs, AR. The site of next year's S2K Days.

I was hopeful that running the BG Engine Restore product may have helped eliminate the intermittent oil consumption issue on my 2003 AP-1. Last Sunday at the first gas stop (after running through a full tank) the oil level was right where it should have been. The next gas stop it was down a little over a half a quart. Over the trip I had to add four quarts of Mobil 1 (that is a quart every 713.25 miles on average) BTW: It turned 185K miles yesterday.

1 quart per 1000 miles is somewhat normal, so you are a bit over that level. On the bright side you aren't harming anything so no bother making repairs to correct it. Oil consumption is funny like that, you can go a long time with no consumption then it all disappears very quickly, I stopped trying to figure it out myself. I do know high rpm VTEC operation and high g cornering uses more oil than other kinds of driving. That's it.

Seems like a lot Matt, have you ever done a compression test?

It is interesting how the early S2000s go through oil. I do change every 3000 miles because I like to (with an OEM filter) and I frequently check both sides of the oil dipstick. It never changes one single X. Ever. 2009.

Always used Mobil 1 0w-30.

This is what it looks like for a valve adjust. Super clean.

^ it is mostly the way the cylinders were bored with torque plates in place on Ap2 engines, and not Ap1 engines. The lower redline also helps. There really is a big difference in oil consumption between Ap1 and Ap2, it is what it is.

I've been reading claims (here) for years that Mobil1 burns excessive amounts of oil in the S2000 AP1 engines. And that some engines just burn oil down to a certain level and then stop. Easy enough to try another engine oil and not add oil as long as the level is between the marks on the dip stick as noted in the Owners Manual.

FWIIW: BillMan250 suggest running an AP-1 a half a quart low.

Perhaps at the next oil change I will try another brand of synthetic oil such as Valvoline and see if that makes any difference. Any suggestions as to brand???
