Default Is there an American car that you would buy?

One of my colleagues and I were talking at lunch today. He is in the market for a new car. His Maxima has 145,000 miles and is running fine, but he feels its time. He'd like to buy an Acura TL but he doesn't want to spend the money.

He mentioned that he could buy an American (Ford, GM or Chrysler) for less money, but he just doesn't have the confidence in anything coming out of Detroit.

I agreed with him and suggested that they really aren't making anything that I'd like to buy, and even if they did, I wouldn't have the confidence in the quality to buy it. He agreed.

How about you? How do you feel about it? Is there an American car being made today that you'd buy? I don't mean an exotic or sportscar (ie:Corvette) but I mean an everyday type of car that you'd buy to commute to work, the store and where ever else you go when you're not using your S2000. Is there any American car that you'd have enough confidence in to own?

I must, since I bought a Cadillac CTS just a couple months ago. True, it's my first American car since 1971 but so far both the wife and I are really happy with it.

Dave, I warned the new Vintage Member <Planky> that you would be 'talking to him' about his/her comments on the New Member thread...

Good question, Rob. The answer is No. There are plenty of American cars, OK, change that to a few, that I like, but I wouldn't buy one. (the Corvette this year is HOT, and I dig the Dodge Magnum wagon.) I'm of the fear/opinion that my American car would be in the shop for subpar design. I know Andy's Ford trucks are always getting something fixed. I don't care if you can get an extended warranty to cover it. I don't want the hassel, at all.

After the last two new GM cars we bought ('72 Vega and '76 Camaro), and the two '05 Mustangs we rented last year, the idea of owning an American car scares me. I don't think there is any way I'd ever be comfortable owning an American car again, even if they routinely went a million miles without problems. Just been stung too many times, and I'd feel like a complete idiot if I let it happen again.

I'd get another Ford truck for a daily driver.

Jerry,

I think you've missed my point. Your list is of the cars that have some sort of "wow" associated with them. Without question, there are some being produced by Detroit, many more than you list.

My question really wasn't that but rather would you be comfortable buying one? Would you trust the quality and reliability? In essence, would you feel as assured of a General Motors, Ford or Chrysler product as you feel of a Honda or Toyota?

Dave,

I was thinking of you when I was talking to my colleague and when I started this thread. How has the Caddy been so far? Did you have any problems at delivery? With the dealer? Etc. etc. Are we really looking at new American cars and a reformed industry or is it just the same old same old in new skin?

I'm curious to hear about your experiences with the car.
