I just got back from visiting my 99 3/4 yr old mom in NC, so that's the main reason I haven't posted on this thread.

I have a turntable right beside me on my desk. I also have about 1000 45's and several hundred albums in the basement, not to mention the 100 45's on my Seeburg JB. (My faves)

I have copies of most of the records listed so far. I'm more into early R&B, however.

Special award # 1: Who originally recorded "The Twist" ?

Timi Yuro is correct. Almost nobody remembers her.

I think Joe Turner's version of "Shake, Rattle & Roll" is the better of the two. From what I understand, white radio stations of the 50s thought it was too sexually suggestive for their audiences and promoted Bill Haley's "cleaned up" version.

You wear old dresses,
The sun comes shinin through,
I can't believe my eyes,
All the best belongs to you.

Was considered too risque. This happened an awful lot.

Do you remember Arlene Smith and the Chantels ("Maybe", "He's Gone"). Possibly the best girl group of all time.

I believe that Phil Spector, in addition to writing the song, was one of the Teddy Bears. Supposedly, "To know him is to love him" is written on his father's tombstone and that was the inspiration for Phil.

Phil was a very, very difficult person to work with, but was a genius. His "Wall of Sound" was to become his trademark, and groups such as The Crystals, Bobb B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans, The Ronettes. Darlene Love (solo after the Crystals & Bobb B. Soxx) were all part of his studio. He married Ronnie Spector. They were together for about 10 years and divorced.

Phil took advantage of all his singers and never paid the proper amount of royalties. Ronnie Spector and others recently (within the last 5 years) sued him and won a few million dollar settlement.

Last year an actress was found murdered on his property. He has recently been charged with the murder.

There is a 4 CD set of the best of Phil Spectors music titled, "Back to Mono". It is perhaps the best collection of early rock 'n roll/r & b that I own.

Sorry, but "The Worst that Could Happen" is Johnny Maestro's best song. I still sing that one out loud today.

Royal Gaurdsmen also did "Christmas Bells" where Snoopy and the Red Baron enjoy a Christmas drink. One of my Christmas favorites.

If you really love those heart breakers from the 50s and 60s, here is a little tip. Get Vonda Shepheard's first Ally McBeal "soundtrack" CD. (Vonda was the barroom singer in Ally McBeal and all the songs she sang in the bar are compiled on CDs. Her first is the best.) Her voice is smokin' and her style is unparalelled. She cover all those oldies in a way that lets you forgive the fact that she has re-made a classic.

Ok, what about car songs?

Who did "Mabeline?" What car was it? What was its mechanical problem?

Name all the mods in the "Li'l Deuce Coupe"

What did the "409" come with?

What cars raced at "Deadman's Curve?"

Who sang "Hot Rod Lincoln" and what cars were in the race? Which cars were "settin' the pace?"

Oh, and in "Tell Laura I love her" What happenened?

Man, I am seriously outclassed, but nobody yet mentioned:

"And we'll have fun/fun/ fun
'Till Daddy takes the Tbird away "

I think there was also a drag race and lovers death in

Leader of the Laundramat

Is that the one where the girls friends keep saying "Yes, we see.... "
