I respectfully disagree. Check out this list:

While those songs (Green Door & Rock Around the Clock, etc.) were obviously some of the first played on "Pop" radio stations (read "white") to be called rock & roll, the other records listed contained the elements of rock and roll that were eventually incorporated into the mainstream music. Elvis, in fact, was heavily influenced by the R&B & blues songs he heard growing up in Mississippi. His recording of "Hound Dog" was a remake of Big Mama Thornton's recording of the same name, for instance.

My question is:

Why do we retain this useless information in our brains?

Those oldies but goodies,
Reminds me of you,
The songs from the past,
Bring back memories too.

Who did it?
What was the name of the song?

(and yes he used the word "reminds" even though it was bad English)

This brings to mind another song, but from a completely different era:

When I was young I listen to the radio
Waiting for my favorite songs
When they play I'd sing along
It made me smile.

Those were such happy times and no so long ago
How I wonder where they'd gone
But they are back again just like a long lost friend
All the songs I loved so well.

Every sha-la-la-la-la
Every wo-oh-oh-oh
Still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling
That they starting to sing
So fine.

When they get to the part where he's breaking her heart
It can really make me cry just like before
It's yesterday once more.
...

Gene is absolutely right. Green door, Rock around & etc. were the songs that probably introduced the music to the white audiences. Rock 'n roll and r&b predate many of the songs we associate with early r n r.

DLQ, where is the best place to sell some of the old albums from the 50s and 60s. I'm paring down so I can travel light one of these days. I think I have some 78s in storage somewhere, though I can't vouch for their condition.

In the hills of western PA we were lucky to get any station, be it "white" or otherwise. I'm sure it was white. In fact, I spent a lot of time there since my buddy was a radio DJ at our little local station at the top of Central Ave across from Hogsback Hill! I see the Jim Lowe version was in '56 and that's probably about the time I got hip to music. I don't recall a particular radio station other then our local; but, maybe we could get KDKA out of Pittsburgh. We got the sounds from someplace, since probably 70% of my music was non-white. For sure, even a lot of the white hits were remakes of R&Bs.
