Think about how many crimes are solved by the video monitors....

Ah jerry, jerry jerry,

a vast data engine merging records in a vast computer network that can never go wrong right?

a gps hiccups and shows an aberrant reading for while..
you accidentally leave your cell phone in a friends car, a friend who likes to drive real fast...
how do you fight a ticket for speeding in nevada when you get the ticket in the mail 6 months later?
try and go prove you weren't there.

what happens when they take the next step and infer behavior out of correlations of data which is typical of "bad activity".
Your cell frequently shows up at the same location of suspected terrorists...
by inference, you suddenly show up on the no-fly-list.

it's not the the deliberate malfeasance but bumbling incompetence.
The more people believe in the system the harder it is to fight.

Trust me Jerry I design systems for a living.

I thought some car rental companies have been tracking their cars as early as 2004. Here is an example:

Yes, they do. I have a friend that works for a government agency that shall remain nameless, who has assured me that they do and have been ever since the Patriot Act was signed.

Since a cell phone is just a radio telephone, I always assume that my conversations can and probably are being listened to, especially since cell phone scanners can be bought by practically anyone.

I also assume that any time I go out in public, my movements are captured on camera somewhere. With the proliferatioin of traffic cams and security cams, the average American appears on a video camera on at least 10 times a day. In London, the average Briton appears on a camera on average 300 times a day according to some sources.

If your car has OnStar, or BMW Assist or similar, your movements are already being tracked. That's how they know where to send EMTs if you get into a wreck, or how to locate and disable your car if it's stolen. And they do cooperate with police departments throughout the country. So if you're trying to run from the police, they can give the police your location and disble your car, as well as lock you inside the car.

Privacy is an illusion.
