Default Takata files for bankruptcy

Takata files for bankruptcy, says will be bought for $1.6 billion - Business Insider

Anyone want to bet that they try and dance away from replacement cost.
of course this has been dragging out for years now.
and every year there are fewer cars to repair.

I hope they do go bankrupt for causing the death and injuries to so many people. But, you are probably right.

Companies go bankrupt daily. Colt's (the firearms company) does this every couple of years. In this case, though, the trade name is very valuable so someone always buys the assets. Winchester, Remington, etc. This won't happen with Takata though.

We just sold the Subaru. It had a recall for the airbag replacement. We were notified in the spring, and at that time, were told parts were not available. Last week before the new owner took possession of the vehicle, I called two local Subaru dealers. Both now have plenty of stock available to replace the air bags, yet Subaru had not updated us.

We told the young man of the issue, gave him the paperwork and suggested he call for an appointment soon. This kid (maybe 19 or 20) was so thrilled to be buying a WRX with low mileage, well maintained, I don't think he paid much attention. He picked up the car on Friday, and had already registered for a mega Subaru meet in CT on Sunday. Even though Subaru will be notified of new ownership through the Registry/DMV records, I went on line and made the change on their website too.

Hopefully, he'll get the recall done soon. It's a bit of a joke when they send a recall and tell you not to sit in the passenger seat until the repair is done. That passenger seat had been used since 2008.

Of course Takata filed for protection. They found out Sandy just bought a Ford Ranger with a Takata air bag. Recall has been out from Ford for a year and they still don't have parts. Fortunately its just the passenger air bag. I'm about to google "how to disable passenger air bag in Ford Ranger.

My son bought a used Suzuki Reno while he was still in school a few years back. Of COURSE Suzuki immediately announced the closing of their North American operation, except for bikes.

I'm never buying a Japanese pace maker. I swear they are watching.

Here is the latest...
"UPDATE 6/28/2017, 11:30 a.m.: Key Safety Systems (KSS) said it will drop the Takata name once the bankruptcy and sale are approved, according to KSS senior vice president Ron Feldeisen. The sale does not include Takata’s liabilities or its airbag business. Automakers are still unsure if they will be reimbursed for recall costs, and lawyers representing victims say the bankruptcy may limit their ability to collect damages." -Car and Driver

Sorry to hear of everyone's frustration with replacements. I'm not sure why (being in Michigan??) but the wife's Subaru was done within 6 wks of the notice and my Audi was done within 2 wks of being listed.

Count your blessings, Dave. They were supposed to focus on cars in humid warm climates first. You know. Like the Gulf Coast?

Just (finally) noticed the Past list in your sig. What was the Stag like to own. Always thought they were quite handsome in spite of the sort of wonky roll-over solution. Too bad they built them with the wrong engine when they had the Buick 215 V8 sitting around over at the Rover shop.
