A gun is a tool. Just happens to be a better defensive tool against the threat of your life than most others. Just because you don't feel safe with a gun in your house don't get in the way of the rest of us. Some of you don't feel able to defend your own life or your family's with lethal force? My cheek doesn't turn quite that way. But you have the right to be firearms-free in your own home.
What would you consider better "defensive" tools? Alarms systems? Vigilant neighbors? Bright lights? Pepper spray? Taser? Dog? Unarmed martials arts? Running away? All have a place in the spectrum of defense and response. But if I have to defend my life I prefer to use the BEST tool for the job (12 ga shotgun, with me hiding in a dark corner of my house waiting for 911 response). But handguns (held behind you) are useful for answering the door without scaring random visitors or postal workers.
If it sounds like I might have some self-defense training you'd be correct. I advocate that for EVERYONE who intends on defending themselves, regardless of the tools you employ. If I sound paranoid, maybe I am. That's a "risk" I'm willing to take. Heck, I'm odd in so many other ways! And I haven't even touched on debated 2nd Amendment reasoning (RKBA, which I firmly support because history DOES repeat itself).
I happen to use a gun safe in my home that allows near-instant access but is still child-proof, despite not having children in the house. Knives can be more lethal than small caliber guns but they do require more training and physical ability. "Sam Colt made all men equal" Amen.

I don't think the Court will hear a 2nd Amendment issue again for a long time or until it is perceived that the then court will be favorably constituted to challenge the same again.
