It was a 300TE that started it all for me.
I always had this image of Mercs as sleep-inducing, safe, staid, reliable transportation, that is until I went and test drove a used 300TE wagon.
You know mundane, grocery-getter, Saturday-kids-to-the-soccer-game, flea-market, mommy-mobile
3 liter inline six 4 speed wagon. I was about 300 yards down the road when I went "HOLY S***" this thing is fast.
Off the line it would match an S2000 in a 0-60 run but without the drama.
Crisp rack and pinion steering. well mannered road control. No I didn't buy that one but 13 mercs later....

ok, probably a slight rose tint. but in 1996 when I did the drive it was damn quick against what else was out there.
The point was it was substantially quicker than what was my expectation going in.

Yep, I understand that. Mercs have always been pretty good about making hp and performing better than expected.

I learned what turbo lag was in a 300TD wagon.
As far as how quick a car feels there are official numbers such as h.p. and torque and 0-60 and then there is seat of the pants feel which can be two different things.

I watched it, I don’t keep up with the new vehicles much anymore and when I do see something on them I’m always amazed at all the excess in everything. It is kind of ridiculous. I mean 600 plus horsepower in a street driven station wagon, plus the Porsche Panamera had ten piston calipers on it and they all do 0-60 in 3 seconds AND the Porsche is 220,000 thousand dollars, I didn’t catch them mentioning what the other 2 sell for.
