From a "Different", point of view... 
It was July the 21st, of ‘61...that we were brought together for the 1st time….mid morning we were placed on a hill, very near Bull Run creek….I remember a house….yes, as I recall…it was Henry House,… Hill….
It was the first time that we had actually been placed side-by-side….and not knowing that our commander, ‘Ol Pendy…would introduce us to the sites of horror…of which no man had ever seen, or conceived before.
We were just built & shined…our carriages were painted a burnt red, not of the grey, as our brothers…My boys would polish our bronze tubes…daily…and keep us in pristine condition, as to be show pieces…not instruments of “Hell”……. that we, would soon enough become….
When the sun would set upon us….our barrels would glisten a cherry red hue, a blinding site, as we are so gorgeous… We were the” Pride of the Confederacy“…..
Each of us would sport 12 men…eight would be our family, four, would be “extras” as we would soon find why…..the four extras would take care of our 12 horses, each, chosen from the best …of the Southern stock.
…but also, not as a standard for most units, we…each, had a “Drummer Boy” He was usually 10...to 12 years of age…and more than often, ran away from home, to be a part of the “Glory” that “ALL” of us thought this would be…..…
………I shall like to forward ahead, to where we are today, and perhaps the latter part of our introduction, will fall to place, after we speak of this engagement….
It is early ….the morning fog & dew, are heavy…on this September the 17th …..1862. It is rather quiet, except for the sounds of muster, a smell of burning wood, through the cool air, enters our nostrils, some faint snorting of our horses, tied among the trees, behind the West Woods…..There is a small white building, just to our right side…Looks to be a schoolhouse, of some sort ???? …..No…..I think it’s a church…I heard Stonewall say….he wanted our muzzles pointed in the direction of the corn field…just to the front left side of the Dunker Church….
We have seen the “Elephant“…many times…..I can hear my 8 “Boys” heading towards me…..’Ol Pendy says to my commander…..elevate 10 degrees….tie um down boys….it’s gonna get thick here…Drummer Boys !, You shall be loud today…and keep a fast roll…..
I want a clear path to the limbers….10’ wide, and 100’ long…No stumbling…there will be much, haste today…
We have been in engagements many times, past…. Over many miles, however I feel something different…very different, this time….The paths are being cleared…and the lieutenant has ordered two buckets of water to be placed, to our sides today ???? 2…????
….This pace is feverish….We are together, now…side-by-side … time is near, and my boys are anxious, and their trembling hands are noticeable.. We are loaded with long range shot. We know what’s about to take place…and some of my boys are sick…and tears are dropping down their cheeks…but they are at the ready…and proud.
…To my far left, …..is Matthew …with his eight boys…and Jacob, …smilin, a gleam in his eye, and his shirt is tucked in…his eyes are straight ahead…and his drum is at the ready…..There is a Chaplain, walking our line…..
…To Matthew’s right, is Mark …and his eight boys…and Caleb, …just as Jacob…at the wait..
Mark’s right wheel…still wobbles a bit, from a fragment hitting him at 2nd Manassas…We are without replacement parts…..
…To Mark’s right, is Luke….Luke is my best friend …..and his eight boys…My friend, lost Isiah, at 2nd Manassas…He will have no drum roll, to keep his boys…and himself going… I fear for him …
…I am John…and I am telling you this story, of how it is.., of total carnage, and horror beyond all you could ever imagine, the defining noise, the earth shutters, the air is filled with the sents of death, and huge clouds of red spray, blanket our foreground…My boys are with me… now, we are ready for what the Lord has in stored… Thomas Henry,he is 10...We came together when he was 9... looks over toward where Isiah should be…smiles and commands his eyes forward, to me…
….There are 496 more field pieces, in this engagement…All…. telling the same stories, of their battery’s…and their boys…..
……The elephant….is near…we are at the ready, and ‘Ol Blue is on Lil Sorrel, pacing our line, his crotchety kepi, is pulled down low over his eyes, his saber is held high in the air…He smiles ……….
…I look one more time.. to my left…perhaps… my last …..to see us all together, and I smile…and think once more ,of times past…I remember …from VMI…till now, …..We are a shining tribute, to the “Pride of the South”….The primers are set…the lanyards are taught….we….are at the ready.
…..’Ol Blue’s saber drops, Pendy looks to us…straight in our faces….” 1000 yards, 5 second fuse…for effect………………………..FIRE “
