Sometimes, late at night.

I have the same feeling when I go back to Ireland. I learned to drive in the mid '80s, when traffic was light and traffic cops were non-existant.
Fun for me was leaving the house at maybe 10pm and driving the back roads over towards Dublin airport. The roads were barely wide enough for two cars, and I could hit 80mph on the straightaways.
There were no critters sharing the roads. The cows and horses were asleep in their fields, and the biggest thing you'd see apart from that was a rat.
When I spent an hour doing that, I'd come home and get out of the car with my heart pounding, my hands trembling, and a big grin from ear to ear.
Although not up to the standards of 'Rendezvous', my best time for traversing the 24 miles from the south side of Dublin city to my house was 18 minutes, at approx 3am one morning. I hit speeds of over 120mph indicated on the speedometer, and managed to trigger the fuel cutoff a few times. I didn't go thru any red lights, just drove flat out.
Now I go back to Ireland and the traffic is terrible. They sold over a million new cars since 1990, and the roads are crowded. They even have traffic cops now, although it's still nowhere near as bad as NJ, where they seem to hide behind every bush and overpass.
As suggested above, I think I need track time.

Rob, just another reason why cities suck and country rules!
I spent some time yesterday blasting my little S2000 around for 80 miles, (wearing the shirt you sent me, thank you, very much) and the fun started within a mile of my house. Soledad Canyon Rd, to Sand Canyon Rd, to Sierra Highway for a short stint, then onto Vasquez Canyon Rd, to Bouquet Canyon Rd, to Spunky Canyon Rd, to, San Francisquito Canyon Rd, to Elizabeth Lake Rd, then back the other direction onto Bouquet Canyon Rd, and a reverse of the route.
Can you guess what kind of roads canyons are? Not much straight when you're following a canyon. Coulda used some company, though.

I spent Tuesday through Thursday last week traveling through places like Gerlach, NV and Capitan, NM in the S on my way back from Oregon. Except for the evening rush-hour in Las Vegas and the grid-lock in western Portland, OR. there was very little traffic. It was a very enjoyable three day trip.
