What a beautiful day for a paddle! (No, not geez - you can't say anything around this crowd.... )

Today I went canoe shopping, and I think I found one that's a car enthusiast's dream:

A canoe in Carbon Fiber! Woohoo!

I really like the looks, not to mention the fact that it's only 50 pounds! Now, it's decision time. Expensive, but light weight & good looks, or cheaper, but heavier and available in multiple colors..... Hmmmmmm......

Well JonasM, do you care more about the looks of it or the weight? How about the handling? Is that the same, or different?

Well, the looks are cool! Handling if the Carbon one was excellent, and the model I'm most interested in has a very similar design. As to weight, it would cost me $75 for each pound lost (6 pounds difference). As to handling, it shouldn't matter too much whether I choose Kevlar/Spectra or Kevlar/Carbon Fiber. The boat design is the same, and they're both 'glass materials' with similar rigidity. The Carbon has a clear coat than can (and will) get quite scratched up, but the same really applies to any gelcoat surface. Maybe I can Zaino the Carbon, though!

Unfortunately, they didn't have any of my preferred model in stock and at the demo day, so I was testing the rest of their model line. I might have to make the drive up to London, Ontario (about 5 hour each way) to test one out after they build it for me. Stabilityis my big issue, and I wasn't happy with the Carbon one they had. I need to email the sales rep today to tell him my preference, so they can start building.

Portaging is a constant where my family usually goes, so yes, weight is very important. However, I had no trouble lifting the Kevlar/Spectra one up by myself, even with my bad back, so it's really a matter of degree, not just heavy vs. light.

i did a lot of canoeing up in Quetico Superior. Wish they had had cf canoes then. If you like to canoe check that out. it's a pristine wilderness only accessible by canoe. Water flows in all four directions, it's amazing how you can get around.

Here are photos from Saturday, May 15th, when my daughter, Christa and her boyfriend, Brandon, were ready for Christa's 11th grade Prom.

Yep Granny, I love my "little" dolly to pieces.
She's a straight-A student and always comes home on time, too.

We almost always have .
