This happened to me today. I got back $5 too much from the guy at the food court. I thought it would make an interesting topic for discussion. What do you do in this situation?

I'd give it back right away. If I were headed home and noticed it, I'd give it back the next time I'm near the place. If it's not someplace I will be by again, I guess it's mine, although I might mail it back depending on the amount.

People have no problem telling the cashier when they get shorted then why would anyone think it is right to keep the money when they make a mistake in your favor. I would give it back right away.

I think it's great to say Take The High Road. But to be honest I voted it depends. For example, I had work done but the worker did not do everything that we talked about. After he left I noticed he made an addition error on the invoice and charged me $100 less because he didn't up up the numbers right. Oh well. If he later caught the mistake I most definitely would have brought up my issues with the work.

I always count out my change when its given to me. I'd return it immediately. If for some reason I ended up taking it home, I'd call the place and tell them I have it and that I'll return it on my next visit.

I'm one of the internal debate then return the change people.

On a related note, what about when your server forgets to add that second beer or dessert, etc? Sometimes I bring it to their attention, but if the service was somewhat lacking, I keep my mouth shut.

Getting comped a free drink or desert is a different question. In fact, its not a question at all.

I'm honest. It will be returned. If it's a lot, it will be returned immediately.

I expect nothing less from others. They should expect nothing less from me

^^ Maybe, but if the butcher sells you rotten meat and refuses to consider making it right, then the matter might deserve some "momentary internal debate." I would follow a moral principle and use common sense. And try not to get shot.....
