Somewhere in this mess is Horse, our new farm cat. We caught him in a cage trap a few days ago, and he was smart enough to be calm, thereby avoiding a high speed dose of lead poisoning. Feral cats are a problem around here as people drive unwanted pets to the edge of town and dump them. We've had to put them down in the past as they turn wild over time and can't be rehomed, but Horse has been different.
We took him to the vet, had him fixed, chipped and vaccinated, and now he's been given the run of the garage (and the ride-on, and the tractor, and the S2000...) while he recovers and gets used to our voices. He's eating a large dog bowl's worth of cat food each day and drinking a lot of water so he's definitely in good nick. He's also used the litter tray, suggesting he still has some memory of domesticity despite his battle scars.
Tomorrow we'll open the door from the garage into the play room so he can introduce himself if he feels like it, and soon we'll let him back outside so he can patrol for rodents and rabbits, as well as keep other cats away. He's a solid boy, black with white socks and chest (I think, I didn't get to spend much time eyeing him up and he's a champion at hide and seek), hopefully he decides to stay around.

Jim, have you and Chris decided on getting another dog? My sister just took in a 12 week old beagle mix. It's a rescue, but I'm not sure from where, maybe a puppy mill? She's hoping the dog mixes well with her other dog. That's the condition of the adoption. It's a real cutie.

Great looking dog Sam. I thought you were cat people.

Thanks Dave. We are definitely cat people, but the 2 dogs we've had have been brilliant, I think it's all about finding the right breed. Our samoyed was a wonderful dog, cancer took her far too early. The one above is a Norwegian Elkhound, he's a very good, very similar to the samoyed in behaviour and traits, the breeds are quite similar.

Horse makes his first appearance post-surgery. Not a good photo unfortunately, he only paused long enough to check for prey before trotting behind the garage. Hopefully he went to catch some dinner. He came back and cleaned up a bowl of cat food at some point during the night too. We'll rarely see him, but as long as he's keeping the pest population down we're happy.
