I have a friend who has a female miniature Dachshund. Ziggy sounds very much like Piper. Both are very smart and manipulative, but lots of fun. And, lots of personality!
The more I read about mini-dachsunds the more I learn that all of them share certain traits, not the least of which is a strong manipulative personality. Sue, if you want to examine for yourself the breeding techniques used by the German breeders to develop these little fellas, it too is interesting (at least to me). Apparently they used genetics to cause dwarfism so the little fellas would have those short little legs. The development of the dachsund in general was interesting to me as well. I'm amazed at the science that goes behind the development of dogs and the jobs they perform.

There is a downside to mini's. they can also easily be termed fear biters when treated poorly by a larger person.
Example, someone who doesn't like dogs kicks at them to get them away. They really don't like that.
Ours would go nuts and almost go rabid attacking the kicker.

My kids were chatting about Ziggy one day recently and Lora remarked that Ziggy had never had a bad day in his life (I do pamper the little fella) but my son spoke up and said, yeah he had one bad day -- he was neutered. Anyone who doesn't like dogs (or animals in general) should never come to my house. A dog kicker would get a dose of his/her own medicine and be shown the door.

I don't think Titan has anything wrong with his sense of smell.
He loves bananas, Barbara will usually give him a small piece in the morning when she makes her own breakfast.
He can be doing the rotting zebra carcass imitation in the other room snoring up a storm but quietly peel open a banana and he's there in seconds.
I can't even understand how the scent gets to him so fast. He's 30 feet away but you turn around and " Hi Pal, are you looking for some of this?"
I'll have just finished peeling the banana and be on my second bite and it's Pavlov's best buddy drooling away.

Little dog syndrome ? I often suggest that my wife has the same behaviour pattern.

Our last cat had exceptional smelling capabilities just like that, you open certain foods and they are beside you within seconds coming out of nowhere. Our cat would love cantaloupe. We always said that they could have used her at airports to detect drugs and contraband with that level of sniffing ability.
