Thumbs up Scrabble?

I have played Scrabble on and off ever since I was in grade school....and we have some of the original game sets from the late 40s/ early 50s.

Both of our kids play....but grudgingly Kathy and I play Scrabble every couple weeks with another couple that are our best friends. Some of us are cut throat....others just play along for fun.

Now there is a Beta edition on FaceBook, which I discovered by accident! It's downloaded under Applications...can then be played in public or private games that you log onto. I've mostly played with a friend from our Patagonia trip....and she is DEADLY.

I figure it's a good game to keep the aging mind engaged. How about you?

I really like it but I can't find anyone to play. My sister and I used to play before I got married but she is a sore loser. She would stop talking to me for weeks if I really beat her badly. I also like chess but same problem ... no one to play with. I learned to play chess when I was about seven and can still remember my 1st game. I lost in about six moves .... so embarrassing! My Dad taught my sister and me five card stud poker in elementary school. We had a jar of 100 pennies to bet with ...... my sister still owes me $.47!

Scrabble brings out interesting aspects of character.
do you play for the short words and scores which close the board in or big words that score well but may open up scoring opportunities for your opponents?

by the way, best personal score: my sister had dropped down quart one letter shy of the triple, and I had the Z.

I think I've played only once. Having someone who was already drunk explain the rules to me was probably a mistake.

I like playing it with my kids but my son always gets sick of me taking "too long" so we both get annoyed with each other. I don't play it often, maybe once every two or three years but I like it.

Pixie- If you are on FaceBook (easy to join....don't have to do all the "friends" stuff), then a few of us could play a game online. There is no rush....just make 1 move per day....can take a week to play a game, but you're not "waiting for the other guy/gal"

^^ good point Jerry.

When I was a kid, my mom would always try to lose....not wanting to crush her kids ego. Boy, was THAT a different era

When playing with our friends, we sometimes use a timer....which encourages a quicker and less competitive game. Otherwise, it can take forever in a game with....say, 4 people With very competitive types (usually including me), the 'board' can get very convoluted with NO places to make an easy word...frustrating!

Does "Dirty Scrabble" count (you can only use dirty words)?
