Ronnie Gilbert, female voice of the Weavers, died at 90
Ronnie Gilbert, the female voice of the folk group, The Weavers, died at the age of 90.
Famous for many great folk songs including "Goodnight Irene" and "The Hammer Song", the Weavers led the way for many of the folk groups and singers who follow, and help give voice to the folk music that became so very popular in the late 1950s and 1960s.
Ronnie Gilbert, thank you for all the great music. Rest In Peace.

Late '50s and verrrrrrrry early '60s.
We started hearing the Beatles in late1962 followed by a posse of Brit bands (and bubble gum music) and "folk music" died quickly afterwards from the airwaves. Hung on in some clubs. Like jazz it remained a niche, not popular style.
