Road Trip
Hey gang:
Heading south to Sharpsburgand then Augusta for a week to see friends from NYC; any suggestions/ cautions on route?
I got my first GPS (nuvi 255)w) and plan on breaking the 15 hr drive w/ a stay in VA on the way down and back. Ideally, we'd leave after lunch and get to our motel in time for a late dinner.
Google Maps:
Take the exit onto I-78 W toward US-22/US-1/US-9
Partial toll road
Entering Pennsylvania
Merge onto I-81 S
Passing through Maryland, West Virginia
Entering Virginia
Take exit 81 to merge onto I-77 S toward Charlotte NC
Entering North Carolina
Take exit 13B to merge onto I-85 S toward Spartanburg
Passing through South Carolina
Entering Georgia
Take exit 51 for GA-154/McCollum-Sharpsburg Rd
Thanks for your informed comments.

Have you left yet? I don't know that route at all, but maybe Val (valentine) does. At least the VA part. She lives in Lynchburg and is on 81 quite a bit, which seems to be about halfway to your destination. Raul (airgate) would be another good contact. Also might be a good idea to post in the Carolinas forum. Have fun!

When I checked a couple of monhs ago, there was lots of construction on I-81 in and around Pa and I was advised to avoid it. I think the rest of your route sounds fine. I-95 and I-85 through Balto and Wash DC are your alternatives, but that route is no bargain, having driven it from NC to Boston last month. If you do go that way, make sure to use the WESTERN loop around both Baltimore and DC. Gets rid of a lot of traffic. I also hear reports that I-81 through Va is a notorious speed trap, and the fines are steep, so be careful there. No radar detectors allowed in Va.
Also, bear in mind that Va has permanently closed about 1/2 of their rest areas to save $$, and plan accordingly. You can drive a long was in Va without seeing a potty, these days!
