Our Westie went 16 years without ever having his teeth cleaned. He had a nice bone once a week and ate human food the rest of the time.
Maggie thanks you!

I should have...
December I took Roxy in to have a mole/ bump looked at. Vet said does not look bad
Did local and cut if off added one stitch. That was about $280
lab test came back, Cancer.
Took Roxy to a Pet Oncologist office visit was $160
They wanted to run more test... $900-1200
They offered three treatments:
A. Localized Radiation $7000
B. Chemotherapy pills $300 and month 1 year or to the rest of her life
C. Remove 1/2 of her paw where cells was $3000
Treatment A has NO data on survival or quality of life could be one month could be 4 years
Treatment B and C could add 30 months to her life IF it works
pet insurance is a good deal if you can afford the monthly

jukngene: Without seeing the dog, this would be presumptious. However, if you are not seeing loose teeth because of peridontal disease - receeding gums - undermining the "lesser" teeth or a fractured 4th premolar (it's that big one you can't miss), I would say your dog is good to go without further dental care.
If your dog is not zonked out a bit after a thorough cleaning, you didn't get your money's worth in my book. Try picturing a dog tied down on his back with a cavitron tool droning inside his mouth and spewing water - without at least modest anesthesia. Not a one of the 7 dogs in my extended family has ever had their teeth professionally cleaned. I encougage brushing and some minor scaling. Checked yes, cleaned no. If you've had a dog with a cavity, you should have registered the event in the Guiness Book of Records. IMHO
