Old turkey in the freezer
Barbara found an old turkey in our freezer and when she checked the date we decided to throw it out. I hate that, but what would you do? Throw it out or cook it up to "see" if it was ok?

They usually last pretty long after the date on the bird. That being said we did have one that was pushing 2-3 years past the date and when we defrosted it in water, it started to give off really rancid smell has it started to thaw. We threw that one out

Had the same question the other day regarding sliced turkey, so I googled it. It was almost double the time they said it was safe, so I pitched it. Easy to find an answer.

I guess we did the right thing.

When we "find" stuff like that I take it out to the wood line in our back yard and place it on an old tree stump. More often than not it is gone by the next morning. So at least the fox, racoon, owls or hawks are eating it so it is not going to waste.

I never put food outside. Chances are coyotes are getting it and then they'll show up and start killing pets. I've even cut back on feeding the birds since the coyotes started howling out on our patio at night when they're not up on neighbor's porches howling.
