I agree that we need an energy policy that will drastically lessen our releance on foreign oil. I doubt that will happen though. While trying to get there, we should however attempt to stabilize the price of energy and the availability of supply. That alone is necessary to establish and develop a cohesive alternative energy program during a transition period.

There is a new show on science channel called brink which was talking about algea as an energy source.
a few firms have genetically modified pond scum i.e. algae to produce very high levels of oil. From this they extract a biodiesel which can be used directly in a off the shelf diesel engine.
Owners of firms predict 3-5 years to market.
interesting part is I would bet that they could be used for home heating fuel as well.
