I understand the advantages to the public. Or at least to public revenues. 60% of the states consider the front plate to be beneficial. Years ago (heck, decades!) I was visiting an old girlfriend at her lakefront apartment in Chicago and got a parking ticket with I overstayed the meter. I kept it as a souvenir for years, My Georgia-registered car only had my Ranger (gold arc on black) tag on the front and I was backed in (tactical, of course) against a stone wall with the rear not visible. Blank read "Unknown." An advantage for me in that case.

Front plate gets me an instant green light at the E-Zpass toll booths.

Interesting that the UK guys anguish about tag letter spacing. And the UK tags are ugly in the extreme especially the yellow.

In my neck of the California woods, a ticket is $10 with proof of correction, $20 without. I have had 3 cars without the front license plate (or a non-regulation plate) and in all the years I have been there I have been ticketed one time. In a Wal Mart parking lot of all places. $10. The S has escaped the entire time, I suspect the military decal (DOD car registration) on the front windshield has many thinking it is an out of state vehicle so they ignore it.

Good news. I had to put one on my Vette for the first time because the Glendale, CA PD is cracking down. It's now not just a fix it ticket in California any more -- hefty fine.

Speaking of vanity plates, I started the transition to special plates for my cars.
Moving forward I will have State police supporter plates.
I figure what the hell, it can't hurt.

Along with the front license plate issue, Ohio also will begin assessing a yearly extra registration fee for electric and hybrid cars since they don't contribute much in the way of state gasoline tax revenue. I don't know if by hybrid they are referring to plug-in hybrids or Prius-type hybrids.

I believe they will assess both only at different rates.

From Ohio HB 62, the enabling legislation:
(DDD) "Plug-in electric motor vehicle" means a passenger car powered
wholly or in part by a battery cell energy system that can be recharged via
an external source of electricity.

(EEE) "Hybrid motor vehicle" means a passenger car powered by an
internal propulsion system consisting of both of the following:
(1) A combustion engine;
(2) A battery cell energy system that cannot be recharged via an external
source of electricity
but can be recharged by other vehicle mechanisms that
capture and store electric energy.
Emphasis added.

The bill/law is 250 pages (!) and the annual registration fees are't part of it that I could see.
