Savery Avenue in rural Carver, MA is the first divided highway in the country. It was a public works project during the Civil War made possible by the generosity of William Savery who was a local landowner, along with several of his friends, and donated to the Town of Carver in 1861. Mr. Savery and his friends used to hold buggy races on The Avenue on warm summer days.
