Dave, remember those nice pics you took of all the cardinals in the trees? You did not say then they were pests even though your post above does. Are you sick of the cardinals, too? I think this is discrimination against blue jays.

Patricia, that looks like a regular Blue Jay to me. The Stellar Jay have a dark head. Unless I'm missing something.

The birds Dave mentioned are "bully birds" I get a few Blue Jays in the AM, give them some peanuts and they move on with their day. On occasion they will eat from the feeders. My problem bird is the house sparrows. They are just pigs. I don't generally get the Red Winged Blackbirds at my feeders but they too are pigs.

I don't get the Rose Breasted Grosbeak at my feeders. Didn't know the Cardinals would be aggressive enough to drive them away.

We get quite a few cardinals at our feeders but they all take a hike when our semi-regular blue jay shows up. Our humming birds take no s**t from anybody though, except each other.

It looks like a dark head to me.** I get blue jays and scrub jays at my house but I was at Loveland Lake Park when I saw this guy. I was taking photos of the flowering crabapple trees and the filling up Lake Loveland.

**I agree with you, now that I Iooked harder and lightened up the head shadow. It's a blue jay.

Stellar Jay doesn't seem to have any white within the feathers, it's dark color extends to the back. Maybe it's the light or my eyes.....though I know you have posted pics of Stellar Jays before.

I think so, too. I think I've seen them in Rocky Mountain National Park. They live at a higher elevation than Loveland at 5,200 feet.

Good catch.

Venus in the Half Shell is a famous painting by Botticelli
and a book by Kilgore Trout.
Here's a Bunny in the Half Shell
