We've discussed the benefit of shooting RAW here and again...I'm going to embrace it slightly. I need to stock up on memory cards. My camera allows me to shoot in jpg and RAW. Two images will show when I upload them to the PC. Had I had a RAW file on some of my owl photos I would have had more mb to work with and not ended up with a small file after cropping? Edit: I'm hearing that is not the case as it is about megapixels, not megabytes?
All that said, my editing skills are basic. A Canon program allows me to open, edit and convert the RAW file and it retains the original. I'm sure the Paint Shop Pro that I have will do the same. I'm overwhelmed by some of the possible edits so I expect to continue to stick with the basics...........for now. I need to find a course at some point. I'm not one who can figure all this out on my own. You tube and Google only take me so far, but hey I'm going to have some free time pretty soon.
I took a photo of the cat. The RAW file was around 26 mb, converting to jpeg cut the file size in half to about 12 mb (not sure of options there), the JPeg was only about 6mb to start. I don't know how often I'll work with the RAW file, ........Gary's photos pop off the page. Is that due to RAW and processing that is above my pay grade?

So you guys who shoot RAW want to toss me some helpful hints? Thanks!

I thought it had something to do with WWE "rasling" on YouTube.

Hey Lainey,
If you’re concerned about storage may I suggest purchasing a 4TB Portable External Hard Drive for your for permanent photo storage (around $80) and a 64 gb ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Memory Card (around $40) which will hold over 1600 of your 38mb JPEG+RAW files, plus it's fast.

And I'm not sure I'm understanding the advice some have given me. In a nutshell, if I have a bird photo, and I take it in RAW and jpeg. The jpeg file is compressed and has about 1/3 of the MB of the RAW file. If I convert the RAW file, I'd still have twice the MB of the Jpeg. So now if I start cropping the converted RAW file,(unless you crop before converting?) won't I have a file with more MB, thereby more printing options. They tell me I'm getting resolution and file size mixed up, and maybe I am.
