My late dad (who was a finish carpenter) made huge, multi-level Martin "condos" for some of his clients. They were mounted on a tall, steel pole, and were quite elaborate. He also made little Wren houses, and I recall that the opening was the size of a quarter and there was no perch. His theory was that not having a perch prevented the Blue Jays and Crows from bothering them. The Wren's morning song is beautiful!
I'm looking forward to putting new life into this little box

I posted these in the bird thread too. Some birds and bees and a dead rat from my back patio, on Dec. 11, 2012.
^Incoming.
^10-31-2012. Pony Plant.
^12-11-201. Pony Plant.
^Bees enjoying the Pony Plant flowers.
^With that bird feeder, I attract mice and rats. As much as I hate to do it, I put out poison. I've used other devices but poison is always successful. I noticed a smell today by the back hedge and found this big, dead, stinky rat at the base.

Send those hummingbirds back to me, please!
This is not my pic, but it makes me smile every time I see it. This kitty belongs to the ladies who cat sit for us. He is #3 of three white and black cats that they have. He's a kitten and loves the Christmas tree. His name is Tony, the other cats are Manny and Buddy. I think they are Portuguese cats.

Thanks, ladies.
My friend filled me in as to what Tony has been up to.
He now has attacked the manger..we have an angel w/out wings,a 3 legged donkey ,a headless shepherd and a sheep with no a$$. Trying to let the glue set on the angel and have elastics holding it in place..looks like a backpack.
I love it! Cracks me up.
Thelma has batted a few ornaments off our tree. I found a partridge ornament (not in a pear tree) on the floor next to my entertainment cabinet.

Great pics Lainey as usual!
Now, about that Rat...
You do not worry about pets getting into the poison you have outside?
This is what I use, a nail goes through the center, I nail them to small pieces of plywood
The nail makes sure they can't carry it off and store it, they have to sit there and eat it in location
I used to use little pellets until I found all they were doing with them is stock piling them up in all sorts of nasty locations making nests with food

I don't use rat poison very often but my fruit trees draw lots of stuff and after a possum died from it under my deck it made me change how I use it. Boy did he stink.
Now I take 4 pieces of scrap wood and build an open ended box. It's made so that it's only big enough for a rat and the bait is screwed right in the middle of it. Inside box dimensions about 10" L by 2 3/4H and 4"W but I'm not fussy. I use drywall screws with only a couple in the top so I can change the bait. It seems to work and limits the poisoning only to rats. Make it small enough to keep the squirrels out if you have them and deep enough so the coons can't reach it.
