Default Observations on an S as a DD

You all know that I loved my former two Ss. And, some have wondered how I could sell them. And I have pondered on this myself; ultimately deciding to buy a new S after looking at many alternatives.

Right now, today, I have *zero* desire to drive the new S. I want to keep it perfect, so it needs a clear bra, it needs better tires installed (I have RE01Rs ready to go), it has no XM and no iPod interface atm (although that is a matter that GrandMasterKahn will hopefully soon help me solve).

The new '08 car is gorgeous, and I'm really pleased to have it! I do miss my Spa, but Spa was not an option, and I don't care for Rio all that much. Getting a GPW/Red would have been fun and different; I love Laguna, but, darn, there is not a spit worth of difference in what I had vs what I have now, apart from the miles and condition, the wheels, TPMS, and red stitching on the seats. So far, I prefer the '06 dash - was easier to read, IMO.

So I conclude that I am definitely jaded by having used my Ss as my DDs for 3 years. The French have a better word for what I am feeling - "Ennui".

I want to recapture the magic feeling of pushing that red button, and hearing that engine come alive. I want to feel real joy again at having one of the finest Roadsters ever built at an affordable price in my hands. And I keep coming back to the realization that putting 22-25k a year on an S as a DD is NOT the best way way to appreciate it, for me. It had become like a commodity, rather than being anything special.

I am sure the fire will rekindle, but it is interesting to me to realize how much it had waned, and this is not good!

So, as antithetical as it may sound, I am staying away from my S for a few weeks, apart from getting done what needs to be done. And I definitely made the right decision *for me* getting something else to be my DD.

Hopefully, after a bit away, I'll come back to my senses. But you all know I am old and feeble, so we'll see...

Soon, I hope to walk to the garage in the morning, and *want* to find a reason to drive the S that day. Right now, I'm not feeling it, and it feels strange.

Therefore, the Fit. I can't think of a more different vehicle in the Honda family, fun in an entirely different way. I am hoping it will be good therapy for what ails me. So far, it's a friggin hoot. I vTec'd the darned thing this afternoon - and remembered what it was like the first time I vTec'd my first S.

For those of you who do not understand how I could feel this way, please refrain from flames. I think it is probably a similar sort of feeling that motivates some to buy Porches or Lotuses, tho neither of those are my cup of tea, or fit my wallet.

I've been asked enough why I did what I did that I thought I'd try and express it; some of you may now understand. And I certainly understand it a lot better myself having thought it through, and tried to write about it.

I look forward to being an active S2KI member and an S2000 owner for many years to come. Just not this week.

Well, I must admit that I was somewhat confused by your post at first.

You see, on other forums that I belong to, DD refers to "Dear Daughter." I kept re-reading several of the sentences in your post thinking that maybe you were giving your S2000 to your "Dear Daughter."

Ah Ha! Then, the light bulb turned on , and I realized that DD must stand for something like "Daily Driver."

Okay, so I can be a little slow sometimes.

I hope the magic feeling comes back to you.

Thanks, Sue, I can see how that would be confusing - I changed my title a bit
If you knew my 15 year-old, I think you'd agree with me that she needs to be FAR FAR away from an S. I love her dearly, but in a Yugo or a '63 Sedan De Ville.

The magic will return, I have faith.

Oh, Dave, there was probably no need to change your title.

The other forums that I visit are decorating forums and general chit-chat, mostly among women, and we talk about our decorating projects, families, etc.

I doubt that many on this board would think of DD as meaning Dear Daughter.

Lol! My wife and dear +1 is a scrapper and visits those types of fora. She would definitely think of a DD as you did at first.

Dave, I'm not sure if I have ever met you or not. I am the +1 of goblueS2K.

We were on Spring Fling. Were you also there?

You said that your wife is a "scrapper." Is that a "scrapbooker?"

I am a "scrapper" of sorts, too, as I like to make quilts out of scraps.

I think that it is getting too late for me (11:35 pm) as I was again confused, this time by the phrase, "those types of fora." At first, I thought it must be a typo. But, I thought, "What could he mean---those types of flora, perhap???"

Ah Ha! Again, the light bulb came on, and I realized that fora must be the plural of forum. I have never seen "fora" before. (I've seen datum/data before but never forum/fora.)

Just wondering, what field are you in?

Okay, sorry about getting off topic. I'm pretty new here, and just learning the ropes around here.

Dave, for staying away from the car for a bit. People always give me crap when i say i have no desire to hurry and get the car out after winter. I tell em i want to enjoy it and its a toy. Once thats really figured out you just enjoy the car that much more.

One thing I've found that makes me love my S all over again is driviing it on the right road. Daily driving on straight roads can make the S a drag. Finding a curvy canyon road or mountain road, that one can get into without having other cars get in the way sparks my enthusiasm every time.

I'm not sure that I'd love my S as much as I do IF it were the only car I had. I definitely enjoy being able to drive it all year long and would not like the storage deal that a lot of members have to go through. I enjoy it more when I can drive it with the top down, but there are lots of days that it just sits in the garage waiting for me to push that little red button.
I do not think it is unusual for you to experience the emotions you describe, Dave. If I had a new toy I'd want to play with it until that longing for a new experience arises. Often I won't drive the S for several weeks and then I'll hit that remote opening the garage door and take the S out for a spin. At that times I wonder why I let her sit so long and why I waited so long for this wonderful driving joy!! It is quite a luxury to have an S that you do not HAVE to drive, but that you can drive for pure joy. My MG experience taught me that a sportscar cannot be a daily driver. I feel lucky that I have a sportscar that actually starts!!

We couldn't make Spring Fling. Our only meet so far this year was Wake the Dragon, so I'm not sure we've met, Sue. We are planning to go to the big Gettysburg meet this August.

My wife is a scrapper Their term, not mine - she does scrapbooks and all sorts of other neat creative stuff that enhance scrapbooks.

And the word "Forum", being from the Latin, should have a proper plural of "Fora". Of couse, modern english uses the word "Forums" more often. Your Datum/Data analysis is spot-on.

I'm a Computer Networking engineer.

You'll find that the threads here do tend to wander a bit, so no worries at all

Dave
