Our 500 Abarth was a brilliant car, no issues at all. We traded it in for an Giulia in October '17 which has been brilliant, and I'd say the best driving sedan I've ever owned.

Fiat makes some very fun machines. But many of them have many, many issues. I've known people who had great luck with their Mini Coopers, too. But I see the brands that are frequent flyers at the shop where most local out-of-warranty European car owners come for repairs. Of course, Range Rovers lead the parade of course but Fiat, BMW, and Jaguar are also well represented.

I’ve owned pretty much every European brand and they’ve all been fine. Our Chevy truck hasn’t been perfect, and neither has my S2000.
Perhaps the people you know have bad luck.

I tend to go by personal experiences, I’ve had 2 Land/Range Rovers and they were both problem free, so

Most modern vehicle models are very reliable. So I am not surprised by reports of trouble-free Fiats, Chryslers, etc. However, some brands are more reliable overall than others. When I make a purchasing decision I rely more on hard data from sources like Consumer Reports and other organizations that do customer surveys (for reliability, not for performance evaluations). Surveys of large numbers of owners only provides imperfect data at best but I believe such sources to be more reliable than anecdotal information. I factor in the experience of the shop I use because of their extensive experience with many different makes and models.
