It seems most of the options are cheap throw aways these days. Which I find really frustrating. We would use it on the first floor which is all carpeted except for the kitchen and hallway tile.

We have a Bussell upright which is ok for the 2nd floor which is all hardwood floors but I'm still no fan of bagless with animals in the house. Also have a Eureka upright which is commercial grade but it doesn't have the nice features that allow attaching a long hose, etc.
We had a Panasonic vac in the past and liked it. We prefer canister vacuums and are happy with our Miele.

Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners are very well constructed and of great quality.
Thanks I will check them out

I sure hope that where ever we live, we will always have a central vacuum system.
Forget HEPA filters, ours exhausts outside so no dust ever gets recirculated.
The powerheads and hoses crap out every now and then.
The motor crapped out once but I simply tore it apart and replaced it.

Ended up buying a brand that likely no one has heard of. Riccar R25P upright with attachments. Made in USA. 5 year warranty. Features include 15' attached hose, two settings for carpet speed with auto adjusting for height, bare floor cleaning option with suction only, special dog hair cleaning attachment for furniture, lifetime belt, etc.

^ This one seems to have lots of accessories that meet your cleaning needs. It looks to be a great vacuum cleaner.

I installed our central vacuum system when we built the house 23 years ago. Since then, the company that made it (Hayden) went out of business and subsequently, the power unit failed. I bit the bullet and ordered a completely new unit from Amazon, and that has turned out to be more powerful than the one it replaced, and so far, no problems with the power unit.

However, the pipes buried in the walls have clogged up twice. The first time, I had to cut the pipe in the basement and luckily, found the clog (wood chips from near the fireplace.) Today, my +1 was using it to vacuum the basement, and wouldn't you know it, it clogged again. This time I identified the clog was near the power unit, and I was able to snake the clog out. Seems to be working fine now. I did caution her to be careful what she vacuums up.

I love having the ability to use it anywhere in the house, but the occasional clogs are a PIA.

the trick of using the shop vacuum to suck the inhouse pipes backwards sometimes works.

Tried that with the first one without any luck, but a good tactic to use.

Costco has a iRobot Roomba J8+ on sale for $599. Wife wants one. We have 3 dogs. 4 including me.

Seems like the reviews are good especially over the old model. Has fuzzy logic and you can program it many ways. Even takes pictures and lets you know how to improve the flow or remove obstacles. Self dumping.

Anyone try this unit?

I can not imagine how a robot vacuum could clean a space like this.

And I have dozens and dozens of similar tight areas. I just spent 1/2 day doing a proper cleaning of 1/2 of my first floor area using the attachments (small 1.25x3" dusting brush and a 14” crevice tool) with my new vacuum non-stop; after doing all the large areas any vacuum would reach.

BTW, I have to mention this feature . . . orange dirt sensor headlights turn on when dirt not visible to the human eye but is found in a carpet area. The lights don't turn off till it is gone! Wife laughed. In high traffic areas it could be weeks or months before we get an all clear.
