Medicare Prescription Coverage
I am getting very panicky. My 86-yr mother is in a San Francisco nursing home and I just have been reading many news articles about the Medicare Prescription plan deadline of May 15th.
I called my sister in San Jose who is my mother's caretaker and she told me that she isn't worried because my mother doesn't presently pay anything for prescription drugs (she has Medicare, Medi-Cal, Blue Cross and Blue Shield), but if you read the news articles, Medi-Cal may be affected by this new federal plan. Plus, there are a multitude of plans from which to pick.
I went to the CalMedicare.org web site but there is so much info there, and I don't have specifics of my Mom's coverage, so I sit here feeling completely overwhelmed.
Anyone have any advice?

Dennis,
Rick's Mom is on assistance for her supplement and her prescriptions.
Are you sure your Mom was not already assigned a plan? They assigned Rick's Mom a Blue Cross drug plan in January. She got a separate ID card for it. We didn't have to sign her up for anything. Her premium is paid by the state,(Mass Health/Medicaid) her co-pays are $1.00 and $2.00. There are a few types of drugs that are not covered by any drug plan and those are picked up by the state.
I had a couple weeks of confusion when picking up her meds, but it settled down. Not sure what will happen when she gets to that "gap" they talk about.
I'd talk to the nursing home administrator and get her input into your Mom's situation.
They don't make it easy for our parents and those trying to help out, do they?
