I'm pretty sure the rule is that no playoff game is required between two teams that are both assured of getting into the post-season.
In that case, a series of statistical tie-breakers is used to determine which one is the division champ and which one is the wild card entry. The one-game playoff is only used when one team or the other might not get in to the post-season.
This came up a couple years ago when Oakland won the AL West. They had a half-game advantage over Seattle, and Oakland had not finished one game due to rain. If this had been for a post-season position, Oakland would have had to make up that missing game. Then, if they had lost it, they would have had to play Seattle in a one-game playoff.
But since both Oakland and Seattle were going in to the postseason, all that was not required. Oakland was declared division champ based on record, and Seattle was declared the wildcard entry.
This is obviously a new rule, because in the old days it was never possible for two teams from the same division to both get in to the postseason. So they always had to have a one-game playoff.

Well, Yankees pulled one off albeit using 5 pitchers. Red Sox didn't. Yankees and Astros would make World Series most interesting. I hope the Astros win against the Braves.

Starting pitching: Pretty close, but advantage Houston
Relievers: Houston
Offense: Atlanta because I never know which Astros team will enter the batter's box
Defense: Atlanta
Speed: slightly Atlanta
Coaching: Atlanta
Experience: Houston
This should prove to be a pretty good series. Pitching allows for that. If the Astros met the Yanks in the WS, I'd definitely have to give NY the psychological advantage. Our starters are definately better, but you have to score at least one run to win games.

I am glad Astros won against the Braves. Bosox and Yanks both lost. This year's baseball is much more engaging than it has been for the past few years, I think. There is nothing like baseball in October!

Bosox down by 2. They will need a big comeback.

Hey Carmen, any room on the bench over there? I may be joining you soon.

I'm wearing my Astros tie today. I hope it doesn't have the same effect as last year for Game 2(if I remember, we lost that day).
With both starters(Clemens/Smoltz) having injury issues, I do not feel we'll see a classic duel. Atlanta wins 4-2 is my prediction. If I'm right, then I look like a genius. If I'm wrong, then we have a 2-0 lead going home.

Plenty of room on the bench LB. Bring your own tear bucket though.

Roger Clemens over Smolz any day! I root for the Astros because of Clemens and Pettite who were Yankee pitchers last year. They are both magnificent pitchers. Beat Atlanta!
