Lying Eyes

City girls just seem to find out early,
How to open doors with just one smile.
Late at night a big old house gets lonely
I guess ev'ry form of refuge has its price
And it breaks her heart to think her love is
Only given to a man with hands as cold as ice
What great imagery. If you listen closely to the lyrics to most of the Eagles songs you'll find much of the same, earthy, real kind of images. I like "Lyin Eyes" a lot, but my favorite Eagles songs are Wasted Time (from "Hotel California") and Desperado.
The album "Hotel California" is, in my opinion, one of the greatest albums ever recorded. It easily stands with with Dylan's "Highway 61", The Band's "Music From the Big Pink" and any of the other great albums.
Lyin Eyes is really about being trapped. In this case she's trapped in a marriage without love, and being able to taste how great it would be to find a way out. But its really about being trapped. Its about the mistake she made and the consequences of it. She married for money instead of love, and now she has to find love on the other side of town.
That theme runs through many Eagles songs. "You can check out but you can never leave", "and admit its all been wasted time", "Desparado, why don't you come to your senses." There is a certain desperate, trapped, admit you've made a mistake theme to much of their songs of the era.
Great music.

I like reading your take on them, Rob. I never thought much about their songs but I agree with your view. Thank you.

The words really are very much in keeping with their themes, and what they sang about.

I thought it was about a girl from the poor side of town who married an older man for financial reasons. Did I miss something? I've always LOVED the Eagles. One of my favorite bands. This is on one of my old Eagles cassettes. Someday I'll get a cd I guess.

Sorry Val, I don't mean to hijack your thread, but if you like the words to Lyin Eyes, you have to love Wasted Time. Especially when you consider the music. I've always thought that the music to Wasted Time was some of the best music that the Eagles ever wrote. Read the lyrics. Great lyrics, great images.
You never thought you'd be alone this far down the line,
And I know whats been on your mind,
You're afraid its all been wasted time.
Wasted Time
The Eagles
Well baby, there you stand
With your little head, down in your hand
Oh, my God, you can't believe it's happening
again
Your baby's gone, and you're all alone
and it looks like the end.
And you're back out on the street.
And you're tryin' to remember.
How will you start it over?
You don't know what became.
You don't care much for a stranger's touch,
But you can't hold your man.
You never thought you'd be alone this far
down the line
And I know what's been on your mind
You're afraid it's all been wasted time
The autumn leaves have got you thinking
about the first time that you fell
You didn't love the boy too much, no, no
you just loved the boy to well, Farewell
So you live from day to day, and you dream
about tomorrow, oh.
And the hours go by like minutes
and the shadows come to stay
So you take a little something to
make them go away
And I could have done so many things, baby
If I could only stop my mind from wondrin' what
I left behind and from worrying 'bout this wasted time
Ooh, another love has come and gone
Ooh, and the years keep rushing on
I remember what you told me before you went out on your own:
"Sometimes to keep it together, we got to leave it alone."
So you can get on with your search, baby, and I can
get on with mine
And maybe someday we will find , that it wasn't really
wasted time
Mm,hm
Oh hoo, ooh, ohh,
Ooh,ooh, mm

I'm not so charitable. The girl was always a schemer. She was that way in school, she is the same way now. She lies to everyone in her life. She's lied her way into a nice little emotional/financial prison where she can't leave the "old man" cause she can't live without the money, but she still wants the hard body so she tells the boy(s) that she loves them and will leave the old man someday, but she has no such intentions. And she probably "traded-up" boy friends back when she was in school too (still the same old girl you used to be).
