Today was the first day of Rosh Hashanah. Tomorrow is the second. Next Thursday is Yom Kippur. These are the High Holy days of the Jewish calendar, and the most sacred days of our year.

On Rosh Hashanah, the book of life is opened, on Yom Kippur it is closed. Rosh Hashanah is a festive occasion as we atone for the past years sins and pray for the coming year, Yom Kippur is solemn as we ask for forgiveness and pray for our dead.

To everyone, a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. May we finally find peace on earth and freedom from hunger and disease in the upcoming year.

ceremony called Tashlich. Jews traditionally go to the
ocean or a stream or river to pray and throw bread

Missed this last week, l'shanah tovah.

 

Today is Yom Kippur, the holiest day of our year. Today, the book of life is sealed for the upcoming year. To better understand how sacred these days are read the following prayer, which is among the most beautiful that we chant. This prayer is said very early on Yom Kippur morning.

On Rosh Hashana it is written,
and on Yom Kippur it is sealed:
how many shall pass away and how many shall be created;
who shall live and who shall die;
who at his appointed time and who before it;
who by fire and who by water;
who by the sword and who by wild beasts;
who from hunger and who from thirst;
who by earthquake and who by plague;
who by strangling and who by stoning;
who shall rest and who shall wander;
who will be tranquil and who harassed;
who will be at ease and who afflicted;
who will become poor and who rich;
who will be brought down and who raised up.
But teshuva, tefilla and tzedaka will prevent the evil decree.
