L'shana tovah
Today was the first day of Rosh Hashanah. Tomorrow is the second. Next Thursday is Yom Kippur. These are the High Holy days of the Jewish calendar, and the most sacred days of our year.
On Rosh Hashanah, the book of life is opened, on Yom Kippur it is closed. Rosh Hashanah is a festive occasion as we atone for the past years sins and pray for the coming year, Yom Kippur is solemn as we ask for forgiveness and pray for our dead.
To everyone, a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. May we finally find peace on earth and freedom from hunger and disease in the upcoming year.
L'shana tovah.

Dear friends and family,
TASHLICH !!!!!!
On the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, there is a
ceremony called Tashlich. Jews traditionally go to the
ocean or a stream or river to pray and throw bread
crumbs into the water. Symbolically, the fish devour
their sins.
Occasionally, people ask what kind of bread crumbs
should be thrown. Here are suggestions for breads
which may be most appropriate for specific sins and
misbehaviors:
For ordinary sins
White Bread
For erotic sins
French Bread
For particularly dark sins
Pumpernickel
For complex sins
Multi-Grain
For twisted sins
Pretzels
For tasteless sins
Rice Cakes
For sins of indecision
Waffles
For sins committed in haste
Matzoh
For sins of chutzpah
Fresh Bread
For substance abuse
Stoned Wheat
For use of heavy drugs
Poppy Seed
For petty larceny
Stollen
For committing auto theft
Caraway
For timidity/cowardice
Milk Toast
For ill-temperedness
Sourdough
For silliness, eccentricity
Nut Bread
For not giving full value
Shortbread
For jingoism, chauvinism
Yankee Doodles
For excessive irony
Rye Bread
For unnecessary chances
Hero Bread
For telling bad jokes/puns
Corn Bread
For warmongering
Kaiser Rolls
For dressing immodestly
Tarts
For causing injury to others
Tortes
For lechery and promiscuity
Hot Buns
For promiscuity with gentiles
Hot Cross Buns
For racist attitudes
Crackers
For sophisticated racism
Ritz Crackers
For being holier than thou
Bagels
For abrasiveness
Grits
For dropping in without notice
Popovers
For overeating
Stuffing
For impetuosity
Quick Bread
For indecent photography
Cheesecake
For raising your voice too often
Challah
For pride and egotism
Puff Pastry
For sycophancy, ass-kissing
Brownies
For being overly smothering
Angel Food Cake
For laziness
Any long loaf
For trashing the environment
Dumplings
For those who require a wide selection of crumbs, we
suggest a Tashlich Mix available in three grades
(Tashlich Lite, Medium, and Industrial Strength) at
your favorite Jewish store.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! However you slice it.

Today is Yom Kippur, the holiest day of our year. Today, the book of life is sealed for the upcoming year. To better understand how sacred these days are read the following prayer, which is among the most beautiful that we chant. This prayer is said very early on Yom Kippur morning.
On Rosh Hashana it is written,
and on Yom Kippur it is sealed:
how many shall pass away and how many shall be created;
who shall live and who shall die;
who at his appointed time and who before it;
who by fire and who by water;
who by the sword and who by wild beasts;
who from hunger and who from thirst;
who by earthquake and who by plague;
who by strangling and who by stoning;
who shall rest and who shall wander;
who will be tranquil and who harassed;
who will be at ease and who afflicted;
who will become poor and who rich;
who will be brought down and who raised up.
But teshuva, tefilla and tzedaka will prevent the evil decree.
From my family to all of you and your families, it is our hope that you've all been inscribed in the book of life for the upcoming year, and the that the new year brings you health and happiness. May we finally find peace on earth and freedom from hunger and disease.
